Today’s News

This Afternoon’s Game

White Sox vs. Braves (1:10 p.m. CT, WGN) in the middle game of the three-game series. Starting Pitchers: LHP Jose Quintana (6-8, 3.06) for the Sox, RHP Julio Teheran (3-7, 2.72) for the Braves.

Last Night’s Highlights

It wasn’t the best of nights for the White Sox in an 11-8 loss to the Braves, but the Good Guys became the first team since 1979 to record three triple plays in a season (click on link below). The A’s and Red Sox both accomplished it that year…Todd Frazier (24) and Adam Eaton (5) each hit solo homers and drove in a pair of runs…Melky CabreraJ.B. Shuck and Jose Abreu each recorded an RBI.

Frazier

Quote of the Day

Frazier, among the major-league leaders in homers, talks about defending his 2015 Home Run Derby title on Monday night in San Diego:

“You try to hit laser beams. I’ve been doing it my whole life. Little League we had a home run derby. High school, I came in second. I think it was a metal bat, it was 25-24. He went last so that’s why he beat me. I have a high school coach who busts my chops to this day.

“Minor Leagues, I came in second and then first time in the Major Leagues, I came in second again. Then I got my opportunity and won it. I love that stuff, man.”

Brackets in the first round were seeded based on 2016 home run totals through Wednesday’s games. Frazier, the No. 2 seed, will be paired against Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies and the Reds’ Adam Duvall and the Padres’ Wil Myers will face off on one side of the bracket. The Orioles’ Mark Trumbo goes against the Dodgers’ Corey Seager and it will be Robinson Cano of the Mariners vs. the Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton on the other half.

This is Frazier’s third consecutive year competing in the Derby. Other Sox who have participated: Carlton Fisk (1985), Frank Thomas (1994-95), Paul Konerko (2002) and Jermaine Dye (2006). The Big Hurt’s 15 homers in ’05 earned him the crown.

Roster Moves

The Sox have placed Carlos Rodon on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to July 6) with a sprained left wrist. RHP Tommy Kahnle has been recalled from Charlotte.

Welcome Back

Former White Sox A.J. Pierzynski, Gordon Beckham, Tyler Flowers and Lucas Harrell are all in the house this weekend as members of the Braves. Interestingly, A.J. has as many ex-Sox teammates on the Braves that are presently on the White Sox. Only Chris Sale, Nate Jones and Quintana were Pierzynski’s mates in Chicago.

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Braves (1:10 p.m. CT, CSN) in the finale of the three-game series and last game before the All-Star break. Starting Pitchers: RHP James Shields (4-9, 5.67) for the Sox, RHP Mike Foltynewicz (2-3, 4.29) for Atlanta.
