Today’s Spring Training News

Play Ball!

The first intrasquad game of the spring, a 5 1/2 inning affair this morning at Camelback Ranch, pitted Jose Abreu‘s Team Cienfuegos vs. Todd Frazier‘s Team Jersey Shore. Nik Turley started for the former, Carson Fulmer for the latter (starting lineups shown below). Abreu and Carlos Sanchez each doubled in a run and Brett Lawrie collected a sac fly for the Jersey boys. The Abreus defeated the Frazier’s, 5-4, thanks to Daniel Fields‘ three-run homer.

First Lieutenant

Rick Renteria (pictured below) talking about his role as Robin Ventura‘s bench coach:

“I’m just here to be a sounding board and give (Robin) some information. Like everything, we get so much information in the course of a series that you’re trying to clean it up and try to filter it and use the one that’s going to be the most appropriate for the moment. Sometimes you hit, sometimes you don’t, but you’re out there being prepared to do the best job you can.”

Quote of the Day

Frazier on the early days of camp:

“I love the tone. Everybody has a role, everybody is taking accountability for themselves and it starts right now from Day 1. With the intrasquads we’ve got today, you can see it. It’s focus. It’s focus time. The ability to understand it’s not the offseason anymore. It’s time to go. I see that a lot with these guys.”

Today’s Spring Training News

Oscar Night

In the spirit of tonight’s Academy Awards, @scottmerkin asked Jose Abreu and Adam Eaton who they would want to play them in a movie. Jose said teammate Melky Cabrera and Eaton opted for actor Adam Sandler. What do you think?

Hoop Dreams

A reporter approached Jimmy Rollins today and started chatting with him about his basketball skill. “What’s your shot like?” the shortstop was asked. Rollins replied with a laugh while imitating his jump shot: “Not Steph Curry-like, that’s for sure.”

“Coop is the ringleader, and he has had a long time to collect himself and know what’s going on. And there’s a reason he has done what he has done over the course of his career.

“And we all love him too, man. He’s fun to be around. He’s easy to be with. He’s a guy you’d see every day and never get sick of. And there’s something to be said for that too.”

Sox Flashback

On this date in 1972, the White Sox signed Dick Allen to three-year, $750K contract. It made him the highest-paid player in MLB history. How times have changed.

Friday Roundup: Thome and Ventura on Rollins, Top 30 Sox Prospects and More…

Today’s Spring Training News

Thome on Rollins

Jim Thome and Jimmy Rollins were teammates on some outstanding Phillies teams. Thome talks about the newest White Sox shortstop as a player and mentor to youngsters like Tim Anderson. That’s Anderson (on the left) and Rollins pictured above.

“I remember what he brought to our ball club. He was our leader and he was our catalyst. He was our shortstop. We knew we could count on him. For me, he was just so charismatic. As good as he was in the team meetings, he was just as good as a friend. For me, it was exciting to get him back here where we can be together again. He is that guy now who can help someone like Tim Anderson. He can help (Tyler) Saladino. I think the guys will look to him and they will rely on him. He will be that role model they look up to.

Quote of the Day

Sox Executive VP Ken Williams:

“The attitude coming in and the focus is a little different in the way that we were all disappointed in what happened last year. So the level of intensity, the level of seriousness, is not missing from this camp.

“What has kind of also filtered in is a little bit of light-heartedness with some of our recent additions. They have been through some of the wars and have a little bit of personality to them in the (Todd) Fraziers and the Brett Lawries (pictured above) and Jimmy Rollins adds to that, too. There’s a balance between intensity and having some fun, having enough fun to where your talent can come out.”

Eddie Einhorn was a “Creative Whirlwind”

Today’s News

Visionary Einhorn Dies at 80

The White Sox mourn the loss of Eddie Einhorn, a sports broadcasting visionary who was an executive with the Sox for 35 seasons. He passed away Tuesday night.

“Eddie was a creative whirlwind whose ideas–many of them far ahead of their time–changed the landscape of sports, and sports on television, forever,” said Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. “He was a man of many interests, projects, ideas and opinions, and we all will miss him dearly. It is exceedingly rare in this day and age to have enjoyed a friendship and a working partnership that lasted our lifetimes. We celebrated many great moments together.”

The Sox will wear a sleeve patch during the regular season to honor Einhorn.

“I have the same feeling. From the first day that I came here and I met (new bench coach Rick) Renteria and Frazier, that’s the feeling…the first practice, everybody was happy and was laughing and making jokes. That’s the kind of atmosphere that we need here. We need to feel the chemistry and be like a family. That’s something we need to build from here.”

Great Scott, a Gusher!

A note sent yesterday from Sox Senior Vice President, Communications Scott Reifert:

“So in addition to today being report date/physicals/first workout for the entire team, it also is an opportunity for middle aged members of the White Sox front office to also have their annual physicals (when only bad things can happen).

“At 6:30 am, as I went through the line of medical technicians, proudly carrying my urine specimen, I stopped to get blood drawn.

“‘I’ve been told I have good veins,’ I reported to the kind woman set to draw my blood.

“She fills one vial, then another, then another as I watched.

“Like 25 times before, she then patched me up and I stood up to leave paperwork in hand.

“All of a sudden, blood is flowing – pretty seriously – down my arm to my bent elbow.

“We have a gusher!!!” one trained medical staffer yells, sending me back to get cleaned up and re-patched. Nice way to start the day.”

Editor’s Note: Don’t worry, Scott is doing fine.

Rollins is expected to join the club on Thursday.
