Hahn:

“Certainly in terms of accomplishing what we had hoped to accomplish here in terms of setting the tone and getting through with the right focus, I don’t think we can be happier.”

Ventura:

“There’s just a better understanding from these guys. They are confident in what they can do and what they’ve done in the past. They’ve worked hard and know how to work…there’s enough veteran guys that have kind of melded together. It’s been a very good camp.”

Will the White Sox Shock the World? Read Below for One Expert’s Opinion

Friday, March 25, 2016

Today’s Spring Training News

Sox Projected to Win 88 Games, AL Central

It’s that time of year when baseball experts everywhere are making predictions. One of those experts is Clay Davenport, an original member of Baseball Prospectus. There are some fascinating things in his projections for the upcoming season and one of them is that the White Sox, at 88-74, will win the American League Central.

Writer Will Carroll, in assessing Davenport’s results for the FanDuel Insider, wrote that the White Sox have one of his most shocking projections:

“The AL Central is thought by most to be a two-way race between the Royals (projected at 71-91 here) and the Cleveland Indians (85-77). Instead, Davenport’s projections have the southsiders passing both by and putting up a big 88-win total.

“Most of the offensive impetus comes from Jose Abreu, a five-win projection and 1.000-plus OPS that could put the Cuban slugger in MVP discussions if it comes to pass. Davenport also sees a return to form from Adam Eaton. On the pitching side, their strength is at the top. Chris Sale could be a Cy Young candidate again and while Jose Quintana may not be a sexy name, he’s a solid starter. If Carlos Rodon can build on his rookie campaign and Mat Latos can stay healthy – something the White Sox are very good at – then this does have the makings of a surprise contender.”

More Davenport projections:

This Afternoon’s Game

White Sox vs. Mariners at Peoria (3:10 p.m. CT). Quintana gets the starting nod for the Sox.

Yesterday’s Highlights

Jimmy Rollins connected for his fourth Cactus League homer, a solo shot, and Brett Lawrie belted his third, a two-run blow, in the White Sox’ 6-5 loss to the Angels at Camelback Ranch-Glendale. The two homers brought the Sox’ spring total to 36.

Roster Moves

Following yesterday’s game, the White Sox made the following roster moves: Reassigned SS Tim Anderson, RHP Matt Lollis and LHP Matt Purke to minor-league camp.

With these moves, the Sox have 37 players remaining in major-league camp: 17 pitchers, three catchers, nine infielders and eight outfielders.

Quote of the Day

Top Sox prospect Anderson (pictured above) was sent down, but not before he made a positive impression on Robin (via @csnhayes):

“It’s been big for him to come up here. I think Jimmy (Rollins has) been a pretty good influence on him, and for him to be able to be around him and to really slow down the game. I think when you’re younger you see the game in a certain way, but you want to do everything fast to show everybody how fast you can do stuff. Jimmy has a really good internal clock of being able to slow down the game. I think in talking to him today, that’s the biggest thing that Timmy’s got. Offensively he’s a talent. He’s a very aggressive swinger. He can put the barrel on it very often and hard. I think the biggest thing for me seeing him in the last couple years is, defensively, he just looks so much better and confident and slows the game down a lot.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox (split squad ) vs. Reds at Camelback Ranch-Glendale (2:05 p.m. CT, WLS, CSN).

Quote of the Day

Adding to the Abreu profile, the Sox slugger was praised by President Obama as a positive example of the reuniting of the U.S.and Cuba. Here’s what Obama said to ABC News anchor David Muir about Jose:

“Here’s a guy of immense talent who hadn’t seen his son for several years because he felt the only way that he could play in the big leagues and help his family was to be separated from his toddler. That can’t be the kind of policies we want to promote. My hope is this just becomes one more part of the stitching back together of the United States and Cuba.”

This Afternoon’s Game

White Sox vs. Angels at Camelback Ranch-Glendale (3:05 p.m. CT, CSN). Chris Sale makes spring start No. 2. Zach Putnam and Zach Duke are also scheduled to pitch.

Yesterday’s Highlights

Following his five-inning shutout of the Cubs last Friday, John Danks tossed six scoreless frames against the Padres yesterday at Camelback Ranch-Glendale in the White Sox’ 6-1 victory, giving The Good Guys a 12-8-1 Cactus League mark…Danks’ success dates back to March 13 when catcher Dioner Navarro noticed John was tipping his pitches. As you see, he’s been brilliant since then…Avi Garcia smashed this third Cactus League homer, a solo shot, and drove in another–giving him 14 RBI this spring…Brett Lawrie and prospects Tim Anderson and Cleuluis Rondon each collected an RBI …David Robertson pitched a scoreless seventh inning…Phillippe Aumont came on in the ninth and struck out two in 0.2 innings. It was his sixth straight scoreless appearance this spring.
