Today’s News
Tonight’s Game
White Sox vs. Cubs at U.S. Cellular Field (7:10 p.m., CT, CSN) as the Sox look to sweep the four-game Crosstown Cup series. Starters: RHP Scott Carroll (1-1, 0.68) for the Sox, RHP Jake Arrieta (0-0, 0.00) for the Cubs. Carroll makes this third start after two outstanding outings.
Sox Starting Lineup: Beckham 2B, Gillaspie 3B, Abreu 1B, Dunn DH, Viciedo LF, Ramirez SS, De Aza CF, Sierra RF, Flowers C.
Plays of the Day
Gordon Beckham‘s second homer in as many nights–a three run shot–and Paul Konerko‘s bases-clearing three-run double, one of a pair of two-baggers he had on the night, were the key blows as the Sox won their season-high fourth in a row and third straight vs. the Cubs, 8-3. As a result, we claim the 2014 Crosstown Cup and go one game over the .500 mark at 18-17…Jose Abreu doubled twice, singled and scored a run while Alexei Ramirez and Marcus Semien each got credit for an RBI…John Danks earned his third win of the season, allowing three runs, four hits and a lone walk while striking out eight…The bullpen was once again solid. Jake Petricka came on in relief of Danks and pitched two perfect innings. Maikel Cleto closed it out in the ninth.
Enjoy the Beckham homer and Paulie’s three-run double…
…plus Ramirez’s dazzling ninth-inning catch that started a double play.

Robin Ventura Talks Abreu:
On the slugger’s No. 79 jersey cracking the Top 10 in MLB sales:
“I got one. I got a real one, too, didn’t even have to buy it.”
Did he sign it?
“He will.”
On Jose’s Impact:
“…It’s fun for him, it’s fun for us to have a guy like him. Nobody knew about him last year and now all of a sudden he’s on our team. What makes it fun for us and being around him is that he’s just a good person. He’s a humble kid, he’s a great team person. I think that’s the thing for our guys–you root for him and you’re happy for all these accolades he’s getting and the attention. It’s not going to change him. Guys like to have fun with him because he’s such a good team person and you like to see stuff like this happen to people like him.”
Tomorrow’s Schedule
White Sox vs. Diamondbacks at U.S. Cellular Field (7:10, CT, CSN) in the first of a three-game series. Starters: RHP Andre Rienzo (2-0, 4.50) for the Sox, ex-Sox Brandon McCarthy (1-5, 4.67) for the D-backs.

Today’s News
“They’re scrapping and finding a way to do it, especially with all the injuries of guys going down, you just kind of have to find your way sometimes and scratch and claw and take what you can get. They’ve been doing that, which is good.”

Gillaspie Returns
The Sox have returned third baseman Conor Gillaspie from his injury rehabilitation assignment at Class AAA Charlotte and reinstated him from the 15-day disabled list and optioned outfielder Jordan Danks to the Knights.
Gillaspie has been on the disabled list since April 26 (retroactive to April 22) with a left hand contusion. Before heading to the DL, he was hitting .302 with seven doubles, 12 RBI and eight runs scored in 16 games this season.

Sox Notes of Note
Last night’s triumph was our third win in a row put us back at the .500 mark (17-17)…we are now 51-45 in the Crosstown Cup series and 26-21 at U.S. Cellular Field…the White Sox are way ahead of the pack with 33 ninth-inning runs. The Athletics and Rangers (21) and Diamondbacks and Mets (19) are next in line…with Beckham and Sierra each collecting four hits last night brought to mind the only other set of Sox teammates to record four hits in a game vs. the Cubs–A.J. Pierzynski and Alex Rios on June 11, 2010 in a 10-5 win at Wrigley Field…Sierra’s hits were a career-high and the most by a White Sox player in his first start with the team since Richie Zisk‘s first start on Opening Day,1977.
Quote of the Day
Robin on Noesi’s performance:
“He threw great. Even the last game he threw, he got through three and then that little bump with four, but he’s stretching it out where he’s throwing more pitches. He’s making that adjustment really on the fly. It’s impressive that he’s able to step in and give us that kind of effort.”
Tomorrow’s Schedule

We Never Give Up
Nine of the Sox’ 15 victories this season have been come-from-behind wins.
Abreu Named American League Player and Rookie of the Month
White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu has been named American League Player and Rookie of the Month for April, becoming the first AL player ever to receive both honors in his first month in the major leagues.
Abreu, 27, hit .270 with eight doubles, one triple, 10 home runs, 32 RBI, 20 runs scored and nine walks over 29 games in March/April. He led the major leagues in home runs, RBI, total bases (32) and extra-base hits (19), ranked fifth in slugging percentage (.617), tied for 7th in multihit games (11) and tied for 10th in runs scored (20).
Abreu set major-league rookie records in home runs, RBI, extra-base hits and total bases through April. His 32 RBI tied Joe DiMaggio (1936), Ted Williams (1939) and Albert Pujols (2001) for the third-highest RBI total in major-league history by a player in his first 29 career games. The 10 home runs tied Zeke Bonura (1934) for the franchise record in his first 29 contests.
He becomes the second player in major-league history to be named Player of the Month in his first month in the major leagues, joining former Cuban League teammate Yasiel Puig, who won National League honors with the Dodgers in June 2013. Abreu also is the eighth player since 2001 (when the Rookie of the Month award was established) to win Player/Pitcher and Rookie honors in the same calendar month.
The native of Cienfuegos, Cuba is the ninth White Sox player (17th time) to be named AL Player of the Month (last Magglio Ordonez, July 2003) and fourth to win Rookie of the Month honors (last Gordon Beckham, July 2009).
Abreu’s other notable achievements included becoming the first player in history with four, four-plus RBI games in his first 29 career games, the first rookie since Kent Hrbek in 1982 to lead the majors in both home runs and RBI through April and the first White Sox player since Roy Sievers (1960) to lead the majors in those categories in any month. He also was named the AL co-Player of the Week for April 21-27.
The 6-foot-3, 255-pound Abreu recorded three multihomer efforts, four games with four-plus RBI and a .375 average (12-32) with four homers and 24 RBI with RISP. He hit a game-ending grand slam as part of his third multihomer game on 4/25 vs. Tampa Bay. The walkoff slam was the first by a White Sox player since Robin Ventura on July 31, 1991 vs. Texas and the second by a rookie in April in baseball history (Elias).

PK Comes Out on Top in “Shoot the Puck” Contest
Paulie bested Jeff Samardzija of the Cubs in the Shoot the Puck competition between the second and third periods of last night’s dramatic Hawks victory. Konerko, a former center/right winger youth hockey player, made two of five.
On his last effort, he thought about airing one out.
“But there were people down there and I didn’t want to hurt anyone.”
Both teams had large contingents of players at the game.

Quote of the Day
Hawk Harrelson missed the two games at Wrigley Field with a sore throat. Hope he’s back Friday in Oakland.
Speaking of Hawk, he has taken to calling Jesse Crain, “Jesse Stones,” for his airtight work out of the bullpen this year.
Someone approached Jesse and asked if he had heard Hawk call him that.
“No, I’m usually on the mound at that point,” Crain answered with a shrug.
Play(s) of the Day
Konerko doubled, singled and drove in a pair of runs in today’s game. PK now owns a .311 batting average with seven homers and 26 RBI in 34 career games at Wrigley Field…Alejandro De Aza singled twice, walked twice, scored and drove in a run.
