Today’s News

This Afternoon’s Game

White Sox vs. Blue Jays at Rogers Centre (12:07 p.m., CT, WGN) as the Sox, winners of two of three and two straight so far in Toronto, go for the series win in the finale of the four-game series and 11-game road trip. Starters: LHP Jose Quintana (4-7, 3.69) for the Sox vs. former Sox All-Star LHP Mark Buehrle (10-4, 2.52) for the Jays.

Sox Starting Lineup: Eaton CF, Beckham 2B, Abreu DH, Viciedo LF, Ramirez SS, Konerko 1B, Sierra RF, Flowers C, L. Garcia 3B.

Plays of the Day

Scoreless through six innings yesterday afternoon with only one hit off of rookie Marcus Stroman–an Adam Dunn double–the Sox stunned the Jays for three runs in the seventh on their way to the 4-3 triumph…with one out Jose Abreu extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a double, Dunn walked for the second time and Dayan Viciedo hit his eighth homer (and his second in as many nights) on the first pitch from reliever Jays’ Dustin McGowan to give the Sox a 3-2 advantage…pinch-hitter Alexei Ramirez drove in the fourth run an inning later with a single after Adam Eaton and Gordon Beckham also singled…Chris Sale went seven innings, allowing two runs and four hits with a half-dozen strikeouts. He is now 7-1 with a 2.30 ERA…Zach Putnam tossed 1.1 innings for his first save.

Saturday Afternoon Delight

In one of the most bizarre stats of the season, yesterday’s victory was our first on a Saturday in 2014.

Dunner

With his single, double and pair of walks yesterday, Dunn has now reached base four times in a game 73 times. That’s the fifth-most among current lefty hitters. He’s behind only Bobby Abreu, Jason Giambi, David Ortiz and Joe Mauer.

Quote of the Day

Sale on Viciedo, the bullpen and yesterday’s big Sox win:

“Viciedo coming up with that big hit, our bullpen locking it down, that’s the dichotomy between good and bad baseball. When you’re going, good stuff happens. Luckily for myself, we had some fight in us, and Viciedo flat out won the game for us.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Angels at U.S. Cellular Field (7:10 p.m., CT, WCIU) in the opener of a three-game series and six-game homestand. Starters: RHP Hector Noesi (2-5, 5.07) for the Sox, RHP Garrett Richards (8-2, 2.76) for the Halos.

Boys will be boys. The old “chewing gum on the cap” prank is played on the rehabbing Avi Garcia.
