Today’s News

Tonight’s Game

White Sox vs. Tigers at Comerica Park (6:08 p.m., CT, WCIU) as we go for our third straight win. Starters: LHP Charlie Leesman (0-0, 0.00) for the Sox, RHP Justin Verlander (2-1, 2.08) for Detroit. Leesman (pictured above) has been recalled from Class AAA Charlotte to replace Chris Sale in the rotation. Chris has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strain of the flexor mass muscle in his left arm.

Leesman is 0-2 with a 1.59 ERA in three starts this season at Class AAA Charlotte. He made one big league start, in 2013, giving up a run in five innings against the Twins. The left-hander also pitched seven games out of the Sox bullpen last season.

Sox Starting Lineup: Jor. Danks CF, Semien 3B, Abreu 1B, Dunn DH, Viciedo RF, Ramirez SS, De Aza LF, Flowers C, L. Garcia 2B.

Plays of the Day

With John Danks pitching a superb 6.1 innings, allowing just a run on six hits, the Sox came from behind off of tough righty Anibal Sanchez with three runs in the seventh inning for the 3-1 victory last night. Conor Gillaspie doubled and Jose Abreu followed up with a ground-rule double, tying the score at 1-1…with one out, Dayan Viciedo doubled on a long fly ball to center field, scoring Abreu (click on link below for video)..Viciedo scored the third run on a Alexei Ramirez single…The Tigers challenged the Abreu double, but the call was upheld. The umpires reviewed Viciedo crossing the plate, where he was originally called out, and the call was overturned…Danks got credit for the win and is now 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA…Ronald Belisario pitched 1.2 scoreless innings and Matt Lindstrom retired Detroit in the ninth for his second save.

Sox Notes of Note

The White Sox are tied for third in the American League this season with 37 doubles, including nine in their last two games. Gillaspie (T3rd, 7), Abreu (T9, 6) and Viciedo (T9, 6) all rank among the AL Top 10…the Sox assigned RHP Frank Francisco to Charlotte after a stint in extended spring training. He was signed to a minor-league deal on April 14.

Quote of the Day

Sox GM Rick Hahn on Sale:

“The preliminary read is that his ligament looks excellent. We believe we are dealing with a flexor mass strain of the muscle of his left arm. Similar to what we dealt with coincidentally in Detroit two years ago as well as a little bit last year actually. So, at this point, we figured we are much better off having him miss the start here in Detroit and miss the start against Tampa Bay and then re-evaluate. Hopefully the recovery from this goes as smoothly as the last couple of times we’ve dealt with this and he’s able to take the ball when his 15 days are up.”

Tomorrow’s Schedule

White Sox vs. Tigers at Comerica Park (6:08 p.m., CT, CSN+). Starters: RHP Andre Rienzo (0-0, 0.00) for the Sox, LHP Drew Smyly (1-1, 4.00) for Detroit.
